GLP-1 care, explained plainly

Dr. Rees Checketts, DO, prescribes and manages GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound) for adults at Tanner Clinic in Layton, Utah, alongside the habits that make them work.

Medication works better with a plan

GLP-1 medications turn down the biological noise around hunger. What you do with that quiet matters: protein to protect muscle, strength training, fluids, fiber and a dose schedule that isn't rushed.

GLP-1s aren't a shortcut. They're a treatment for a biological disease, and like any treatment they work best with follow-up.

GLP-1 FAQs

How do GLP-1 medications work?

They mimic GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after eating. They act on appetite centers in the brain so you feel full sooner and think about food less, slow stomach emptying and improve how your body handles blood sugar. Tirzepatide also acts on a second hormone, GIP.

How much weight do people lose on GLP-1 medications?

In large trials, semaglutide 2.4 mg produced about 15% average weight loss over 68 weeks (STEP 1), and the highest dose of tirzepatide produced about 21% over 72 weeks (SURMOUNT-1). Individual results vary, and lifestyle habits still matter.

What side effects are common?

Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, reflux and feeling full quickly are the most common, usually during dose increases. Smaller meals, enough protein and fluids, and not rushing the dose schedule help most people.

When should I call my provider?

Call promptly for severe or persistent belly pain (especially if it spreads to your back), vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down, signs of dehydration, pain in the upper right belly with fever or yellowing skin, or signs of an allergic reaction. For an emergency, call 911.

Will I lose muscle on a GLP-1?

Any weight loss includes some lean mass. Eating enough protein and strength training two to three times a week are the best tools to protect muscle while you lose fat.

Does insurance cover GLP-1 medications?

Coverage varies widely by plan and diagnosis. Call the number on your insurance card and ask whether weight-management medications are covered and what prior authorization they require.
